Quick on the draw?
In our book, Snail is in search of its home. Silly Snail. We‘ve given it a skateboard to speed up its search. Follow these instructions to draw Snail for yourself. Wooooosh!

How to draw a Snail
Step 1
Let’s start with the eyes. Draw two circles, one uphill from the other. Then draw two smaller circles inside the first ones, and add two dots for pupils.
Step 2
Now for the eye stalks – they look like straws with olives on top, bending a bit to the right. You can make them as long as you like – just remember they’ll also make up part of Snail’s face. Add two lower tentacles (this is how a snail feels and smells) like two little drum sticks.
Step 3
Next add a half moon for a mouth at a jaunty angle. Extend the lines from the head to form the rest of the body, narrowing slightly as you go.
Step 4
Now it’s time to start the shell. Think of it as a round motorcycle helmet mixed with a cinnamon swirl. Draw a half-circle coming out of the neck. Then draw a giant C that touches the half-circle. Add a line showing where Snail enters its shell, and a little bit of shadow for privacy.
Step 5
Now to finish the shell add a swirl like a capital G inside the C. And a floppy triangle for the tail.
Step 6
Because the shell is Snail’s house, let’s decorate the outside. Think classy! Add some windows and a chimney. We’ve made our windows round, but they can be any shape you want. Except hexagons – snails are funny that way. Our chimney is a pyramid set on a pillar (historic!) but you can make yours as modern as you like.
Step 7
Time to add that skateboard. It’s like a short ironing board, maybe one made specifically for tea towels. Draw another line underneath it to make it thick – we don’t want Snail falling through.
Step 8
Add the axles, called trucks, for the wheels. They look like bits of tape you’ve stuck there for later. Make the front one a bit longer, with the back one near the tail. Let’s make this wheely good (sorry, we can’t help ourselves). Think of the wheels as basically fancy circles. Draw them slightly squished, with the front ones a little bigger than the back one. Then add a line for the wheel edge, and darken the centers like delicious chocolate filling. Mmmm…chocolate.
Coloring time
And now for a splash of color. Our Snail is a lovely aquamarine green with a deep yellow shell, and the wheels are a fancy red (it’s a bit of a showoff). But you can use any colors you wish.
