How to draw a (modern) princess

A royal invitation…

princess cartoon sketches

When Britain’s Princess Charlotte turned one, we decided to create a How To Draw a princess tutorial, featuring the princess in our book. But we wanted our princess to be super modern to inspire little ones as much as possible. Astronaut Princess, Soccer Princess or Fashion Designer Princess, the choice is yours…

You will need:

  • Paper
  • Something to draw with

Princess first, outfits later…

Step 1

Step 1

Her royal head will wear a crown, so start your Princess off with a lovely round one like a scone.

Step 2

Step 2

Now add that crown. Draw some zig-zags and attach them to the head, so it sits nice and snuggly.

Step 3

Step 3

Our Princess is very happy – incredibly, wonderfully happy. So make her smile big and wide, like a generous slice of watermelon.

Step 4

Step 4

You can give her any hairstyle you fancy. We’ve gone for a choppy look, which the Queen might not be happy about.

Step 5

Step 5

Draw her neck like the stand for a globe, regal yet practical (it has to carry that royal head after all). Draw the outline of her body lightly, so you can pick an outfit later. Eventually, your Princess will be holding something, so draw her right arm a bit away from her body, like she’s showing off her new watch. Her left arm should bend onto her hip. Casual!

Step 6

Step 6

And now for her legs. This Princess has legs that mean business. Business legs. Again, draw them lightly so you can go over them with her outfit later.

1. Astronaut princess

Step 1

Step 1

Everyone knows space requires patches and stripes, so start adding those to build up her astronaut suit. You can add them anywhere, but remember that space is dangerous. Take care of those elbows and knees.

Step 2

Step 2

No journey into outer space should be attempted without the appropriate head gear. Ours is the traditional, NASA-approved fish bowl.

Step 3

Step 3

Now let’s make that suit stand out! We’ve gone for a lovely royal purple, and even added a little crown crest for that extra Princess pop.

2. Soccer Princess

Step 1

Step 1

To make her kit draw a couple of lines for sleeves, and add a line below her shirt for the shorts. Then draw as many stripes as you want for the socks, and a little Z to add a tongue for the cleats.

Step 2

Step 2

Now you just need a ball. We’ve gone for a traditional hexagon pattern, but let your imagination run wild. You might just invent the ball of the future.

Step 3

Step 3

As for colours, you can go with your favourite team, or make up a team of your own. Ours plays in a lovely red with appropriately fancy socks.

3. Fashion designer princess

Step 1

Step 1

Our fashion designing Princess is a fan of the Golden Age of Hollywood, and has opted for a fancy ballgown to show off her skill. Start by adding some sleeves around the arms, and a floral-themed cuff on the wrists and neck.

Step 2

Step 2

Now sketch in the rest of the gown, making it as long as you like. We’ve gone for one that swishes down to the floor.

Step 3

Step 3

When it comes to colours, go big and bold or quiet and classy – the possibilities are literally endless. And finish the outfit off with a lovely pair of boots.
