How to draw a budgie

The bird fit for Broadway…

This is a step-by-step guide to drawing a budgie. Now, budgies are more showbiz than many of us would imagine. Sure, they flutter around innocently in the day time, munching on seeds. But when we go to bed, they really come to life. Rumor has it they put on elaborate performances for wood pigeons. Feeling inspired? Good, let’s get drawing.

You will need:

Pens or Crayons
Paper

Step 1

This Budgie is all about showbiz, so we’re going to start at the top… hat, that is. Draw the crown first like a nice glass of water.

Step 2

Now place a saucer under that glass so none of the water spills, and now it has a brim.

Step 3

Budgie’s body is like the handle on a massive (feathery) mug. Make the body thicker in the middle because Budgie likes to puff out its chest. Its tail feathers should point majestically skyward.

Step 4

Jazz wings! Make a show of it. These wings should say, “Showtime!” Draw them stretching flamboyantly up around the top hat.

Step 5

Now for the face. Because this is a Prima Budgie, it has a few fancy touches around its beak and eyes. Make the top half of the beak by drawing a slightly squished ice cream cone with an even more squished scoop of ice cream. You can make the eyes with two small dots, and add some other simple markings of your choice.

Step 6

To make the beak look like it’s open, add two Vs and darken the area in between.

Step 7

Jazz legs! Draw the kicking leg (the front one) like a golf club that’s been bent a little, and the standing one with an even deeper bend, and a foot like a stretched out Z to maintain balance.

Step 8

Last two touches. Add a couple of thick, dressy stripes on the tail for flair, and a cane in its right wing, because you can’t have a top hat without a cane. That’s showbiz law.

Step 9 Coloring time

Coloring time! Our Budgie is a striking yellow with aquamarine legs, but you can try it with any number of options – the fancier, the better.
